Two puppies thrown off the Dog River Bridge in Mobile were rescued Saturday by the Daphne Search and Rescue team.
WKRG News 5 in Mobile reported that the station received calls from viewers about the incident after 3:30 p.m. Witnesses said the driver of a black SUV pulled over, turned on hazard lights and threw the puppies into the water. News 5 said people immediately went out on kayaks in an effort to save the puppies.
Mobile Police Department, which is investigating the incident, worked with Daphne Search and Rescue to retrieve the puppies.
Dog River Bridge is 73 feet above the water at its highest point. Dog River flows into the Mobile Bay between Mobile and Theodore.
Rescue workers took pictures with the puppies after pulling them from the river and drying them with towels. The puppies appeared alert and healthy.
On social media, commenters expressed outrage that someone would dump puppies off the bridge.
“Look at those sweet precious babies!” Jennifer Henson said. “Who could do something like this? I’ll adopt one immediately!”
Officials asked the public to call the Mobile Police Department at 251-208-7211 if they have any information about the incident.
